چکیده مقاله:

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lacertae objects, Star-bursts, LINERs, etc. Various kinds of AGN diagnostics are discussed. All known AGN types and subtypes are presented and described to have a homogeneous classification scheme based on the optical emission-line spectra and in many cases, also other parameters. Problems connected with accurate classifications and open questions related to AGN and their classes are discussed and summarized.

Herschel and Galaxies/agn

Herschel will represent a breakthrough in the study of nearby gas-rich and gas-poor galaxies, as it will for the first time permit imaging photometric and spectroscopic observations of their ISM in the FIRsubmm wavelength range. The unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution of Herschel will furthermore yield a breakthrough in our understanding of distant galaxies and AGN, as their gas an...

Alma: Galaxies and Agn

With the ability to see into optically obscured regions with more than an order of magnitude better sensitivity and spatial resolution relative to current (sub)mm telescopes, ALMA will provide a unique look into the physics of galaxy formation and active galactic nuclei. In this paper I summarize the ALMA potential for studying star forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei from the nearby un...

AGN Host Galaxies

In this series of four lectures, I discuss four important aspects of AGN host galaxies. In Lecture #1, I address the starburst-AGN connection. First, I briefly review the primary diagnostic tools that are used to quantify and distinguish star formation and nuclear activity. Next I describe the best evidence for a connection between these two processes, first at low luminosity and then at high l...

Galaxy Zoo: Bars in Disk Galaxies

We present first results from Galaxy Zoo 2, the second phase of the highly successful Galaxy Zoo project (www.galaxyzoo.org). Using a volume–limited sample of 13665 disk galaxies (0.01 < z < 0.06 and Mr < −19.38), we study the fraction of galaxies with bars as a function of global galaxy properties like colour, luminosity and bulge prominence. Overall, 29.4 ± 0.5% of galaxies in our sample have...

The Smallest AGN Host Galaxies

We describe our efforts to study dwarf galaxies with active nuclei, whose black holes, with masses ≤ 106 M⊙, provide the best current observational constraints on the mass distribution of primordial seed black holes. Although these low-mass galaxies do not necessarily contain classical bulges, Barth, Greene, & Ho (2005) show that their stellar velocity dispersions and black hole masses obey the...

Star-Forming AGN Host Galaxies

The symbiosis of nuclear activity and star-formation in galaxies, as manifested in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is reviewed. Attention is drawn to an Hertzsprung-Russell diagram-equivalent for such objects, as well as to the importance of the SEDs in cosmological context.
